CONTRAINDICATIONS

When Laser is Not for You

 

A consultation is required before any Laser treatment, it is advised for safe laser hair removal and photo facials that all medications are reported during the consult. The following are some general contraindications. 

 

​Tanned skin

​Pregnancy / breast feeding currently 

Skin cancer or any other cancer

Acne treatment (isotretinoin, Accutane, etc.)

Treatment of chemotherapy, radiation or injections of gold salts (anti-rheumatoid)

Epilepsy

Currently on antibiotics allow at least 3 weeks after last dosage

BEFORE TREATMENT

Your Compliance Pre- IPL Laser Treatment

  • Discontinue Accutane 6 months prior to treatment

  • Discontinue use of Retinoic Acid products 5  days prior to treatment

  • Avoid sun exposure or use of tanning beds and self-tanners for at least 4 weeks prior and/or between treatments

  • If the area to be treated is red, irritated or sunburned the IPL treatment must be rescheduled

  • Report all skin diseases, viruses, infections, cold sores, eczema or allergies

  • Do not exfoliate, use glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide or any other skin irritants 1 week prior to treatment

  • Report all medication taken

  • Avoid microdermabrasion or peels for at least 3 weeks prior to treatment 

  • Avoid waxing, tweezing, threading, sugaring 6 weeks prior to your first laser hair removal treatment.

  • Do not wax, tweeze, thread, or use sugaring on the area being treated during laser hair removal. Shaving is permitted. 

  • Discontinue bleaching creams for 2 weeks prior to laser hair removal

  • Avoid exposure to a hot tub, hot yoga before an IPL session/streneous excersise

Home care

Your Compliance Post- IPL Laser Treatment

  • Avoid direct sunlight, tanning beds or self-tanners for at least 2 weeks after a treatment

  • Apply sun protection cream of SPF 30+ 15 mins prior to sun exposure and 15 mins after

  • Reapplication of sunscreen throughout the day. Consider using a hat to protect the facial area especially after a photo facial 

  • If there are any scabs or blisters, makeup should be avoided on the area for 3/4 days

  • Avoid touching, rubbing, peeling or picking of the skin as this may cause hyperpigmentation scarring.

  • For at least 2 weeks post acne IPL laser treatment, do not use harsh topical (exfoliators, glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide, etc)

  • Gently apply Aloe Vera Gel or antibiotic cream to the treated areas twice daily until healed and dry

  • For 1 week avoid hot baths, showers, hot tubs, saunas. After bathing pat area dry gently and do not rub

  • Be aware of heat exposure whilst opening dishwasher, oven and whilst cooking

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours following treatment

  • A cold pack may be placed over the area to reduce swelling for first 2/3 days

 

Homecare immediately after a laser hair removal or photo facial is very important. Skin retains heat and should be treated gently after a treatment. Keep well hydrated and protected from the sun at all times.

HOT AND HUMID WEATHER CONDITIONS CAN AGGRAVATE SKIN IN THE PERIOD IMMEDIATELY BEFORE AND AFTER A TREATMENT.
